With on-board oil sensing, the 9-3SS, under ideal conditions, is running close to 15,000 miles until the oil change is indicated. The 9-5 holds 5 quarts of oil versus 7 for the 9-3 - the 9-5 *keeps* one of those 5 quarts of old oil in the oil cooler when you change oil, the 9-3SS drains all 7 quarts. The 9-3SS "alerts" you to change oil sooner if your driving habits are specifically hard on the oil, the 9-5 just assumes you know better (and the early changes are *not* covered). Finally, the 9-3 *may* benefit from its more modern design - aluminum block for better heat transfer, roller tappets, oil-to-water cooler for better oil warm up in cold weather (less condensation) as well as better cooling in warm weather.

I've seen enough 9-5s with the engine on a hook *during the warranty period* to convince me that Saab is not saving any money by stinting on oil changes, and they are creating a reservoir of bad will when these engines lunch themselves for the second owners.
