Leasing *then* buying same car - Always a bad idea?

I've always understood it to be a big mistake to buy a car at the end of your lease because by the time it's paid off you have seriously overpaid.
But I can see the flip side - if you have had great luck with the car and feel it's worth keeping, at least you know the history and exactly where it's been. That's worth something!
I saw on the 9-3 board a post by Mike Lynch that mentioned sometimes it's actually cheaper to lease first *then* buy. This has me puzzled so I thought I'd ask. All I can think of is maybe Saab Financial is discounting the lease-end purchase price? But I know Saab lease-end prices are traditionally really low anyway.
Other things which make lease-then-buy seem costly - Usually there is a fee to purchase (a few hundred bucks). Also, leased cars have higher insurance requirements than financed cars.
So has anyone bought their car at lease end? If so, do you regret doing so? Or does anyone swear this is a bad idea, no matter what? Thanks.
