Ramps, or floor jack and jack stands
large pan (I have the kind with a dished, closed top so that the oil drains inside it - then you pour the oil into your recycling container)
*6 point* 13mm socket and drive, box wrench, or ratcheting box wrench. Do not use a 12 point wrench.
Oil filter wrench or strong grip.
TIPS:
DO NOT OVERTIGHTEN the drain plug when you put it back in. Spec is 20 or 25 ft. lb., which is not very tight. I use a torque wrench because I have one.
Get an old juice bottle or soft drink bottle. Cut one side and some of the bottom out of the juice bottle. You use this to wedge under the filter so when you unscrew it, the oil that drips down doesn't pour into the belt shield to then drip onto the garage floor.
Use a top quality oil filter. Consensus as to which is best is split among Genuine Saab, Purolator Pure One, Mann, and Mobil 1. Amazingly, the Wal Mart filter is very high quality.
Remember that the periodic service (10,000 mile) is more than an oil change. It includes a whole lot of "check and fill, adjust, or repair" steps. The intermediate oil change (5,000 mile) is "just an oil change", but I'd do all the checks anyway.
Do not overtighten the drain plug.
Get some drain plug washers if you plan to make a habit of doing your own work.
Don't dump the old oil. Most auto parts stores and quick-change centers will accept oil for recycling. All "Valvoline" quick change stations accept both oil and anti-freeze for recycling.
I've had milk cartons leak oil. I use windshield washer fluid bottles and the like.
DId I remind you not to overtighten the drain plug? It is (intentionally) easy to round off the head of the drain plug, but if you are determined, you can also crack the oil pan.
