Find snow tires now!
We bought a Gary Fisher wagon with the 17" wheels last November. We live in Colorado, and the stock Michelins are SCARY on snow. The back end would come around at a moments notice. At the end of November, there were not many choices at all. I went to tirerack.com, discount tire, local dealers and couldn't find anything in stock. I ended up getting a set of Pirelli Winter Ice through a dealer friend, and they are awesome. The only real problem in deeper snow is they tend to float a little. Interestingly, instead of 225/45/17, they are 235/45/17, and aside from a little taller sidewall, you'd never notice, and it's made no difference in driving (i.e. no rubbing etc.).
Since it sounds like you may have to buy 2 sets of tires, a cheaper route may be to buy steels, but if you're like me, I can't stand the look, knowing that the 17"'s are in the garage.
