There are several issues with bottle jacks compared to a proper roll-around floor style auto jack. First the lifting point is usually a relativly small circle; with a floor jack you can buy slotted inserts that spread the load along the lip under the rocker panel. Second, as you jack up a car, it often moves a bit and a bottle jack will begin to tip; a floor jack has wheels and rolls slightly to accomodate the car movement (also spreads the load over a wider base for more stability. Third, a bottle jack with any degree of lift range is too tall to get under most lift points on a car.
For less than $80 CDN, I bought a 2-1/2 ton floor jack with a quick-lift feature that gets the jack up to the lift point in 1 stroke. It has a range of 6 to 21 inches which is impossible with a bottle jack. This is great with the front center subframe lift point. I can get the car up in the air and on jack stands in a few minutes.
For $99 CDN, Costco has a massive 3 ton jack with a pair of heavy duty stands. Many other places have package deals like that. CHEAP CHEAP insurance! NO JACK is safe enough to risk getting under a car with out properly placed stands. In addition, if I'm doing something with a wheel or 2 off, I shove them under the car (failsafe spacer) for even more safety
