John,
Two weeks ago I made a trip while the temp. was hitting the upper 90s and noticed the same thing, while running 93 octane. I was taking the car to my BMW mechanic to have new Continental tires installed. I asked him about it and he says it figures since the heat affects the efficiency of the turbocharger goes down with the hotter, thinner air. Normally, I take my Saabs to George Myles Automotive, local Saab Tech but find my BMW tech to be great with tires and balancing.
My wife's brother is a helicoptor mechanic, don't know if that qualifies him for much outside aeronaughtics. He claims 89 octane gasahol will not provide any more power nor better milage than 87 gas and only avoids pinging if your engine pings on 87. I hadn't heard it that way before and might question that one.
I have used 87,89, and 93 octane in my 9-5 and see a big improvement with 93 so thats what I buy.
