Hi All,
Just wanted to see if you guys have any good advise. I've had my license since I was 16 and what happened today was one of those things you never want to see happen to you.
I was leaving work and I needed to make a left turn. Traffic was unusually heavy on the northbound side of the road I needed to make a left turn into. I needed to go southbound which was free of traffic. In the center was a two way left turn lane. Well, I had the stop sign, so I waited behind the line the for someone to let me through. Only after 10 seconds or so, someone let me through. I was going to turn into the left turn lane since I figured it would be safer to merge southbound that way. Right as I entered the southbound lane, that's when the Harley met me head on. He was going maybe 15mph, I was going 5-10mph. I hit the brakes, he hit the right side of the bumper square and the rider flipped onto my hood and windshield. His helmet hit the top of my windshield, then he rolled off to the side.
It just all happened in a split second. I stalled out in first, grabbed my cell phone to call 911. Luckily the cops happened to be down the block dealing with another situation and they showed up on the scene alost immediately. The ambulance and firetrucks were there in a few minutes and were there to treat the guy very quickly. The guy had a broken ankle and probably numerous bruises, scratches and was in a lot of pain and had to be taken away in an ambulance. The cops took down both of our information. I stayed until they cleaned everything up and followed the tow truck to the body shop where it's now stored.
So, why am I writing all this? being that it's my first accident, I'm not sure what to do besides call my insurance agent and hopefully he'll take care of everything. But, I just moved down to southern california from norcal, my agent is based up there. So, it doesn't seem like it's going to be easy. The police said that they can't determine whose fault it is yet, but, I'm a little resigned that I may be at fault. But, I don't know...
Anyways, just wanted to get this off my chest and I hope and pray the rider is okay and will recover soon.
Thanks for reading.
Ivan
