Weird fuel gauge: any explanation?

A couple of days ago I posted about my fuel gauge failing. I kept driving the car with no problems(thanks Dean). Dealer examined the car and said they will replace the fuel pump. Anyway, after a long trip today, the gauge suddenly seems to be working again.
Observation: despite the fuel gauge indicating "R" and SID showing 0 miles remaining, the estimate of fuel consumption (MPG) was not affected. Anybody wants to venture an explation for this and for the gauge repairing itself ?
Thanks and best regards to all
