In the very handy Haynes manual for the 9-5, on page 5B-3 of the Ignition system, the following Warning is written twice, on the same page...
"When the ignition discharge module is removed, it must be kept in the upright position. If the ignition discharge module has be turned upside down for a length of time, leave it in the fitted position for a couple of hours before starting."
I can't think of any reason why turning a transformer or a coil upside down would affect its operation, and a capacitor should be non-directional too.
There is probable a reason - anyone got a guess?
However, I now store my spare DI upright, in my wagon, against the back seat, in its box, held in place by a bungee cord on the cargo tracks. Short of storing upright in my permanently mounted Thule roof box, there seem to be few options available.
