If you're going to spend equal amounts on either the Saab 9-5 or a 5-series BMW, I believe you'll get more car with the Saab. If, however, you're going for a similarly equipped Saab and BMW, you'll spend more for the BMW ($8-$12k). The BMW will be a better handling, quieter, and more driver-oriented car than the Saab 9-5 (at least IMHO). However, Saab is slightly better in reliability, is safer in crashes, has more room, gets better mileage, and is better in poor weather driving. Saab also is much less common than the BMW, and can be argued as being better looking architecturaly (though I prefer the pre-Bangle 5-series stance and front end myself).
As a thought, use the ~$10k you save and take a 2-week vacation European Saab delivery. That'll give you huge memories plus an incredible bonding experience with your car (if you're into that kinda thing). I myself fantasize about taking European delivery on a new (sorry, Saabites) BMW M5, though at $90k, it will remain but a fantasy for a while.
