My wife's 96 Sabb 900S was the same. The gas door locked and unlocked with the door locks. We experienced some binding problems several times during the ownership of that vehicle. I had to unbolt it from the inside to get it open to lubricate the mechanism twice. The dealer also worked on it once. Not a big deal. I think this type of lock is more prone to failure just because it operates every time you lock/unlock the car vice hitting the button to pop open the door. I prefer the gas door unlock button.
