Normal procedure for checking the oil is to insert the dipstick all the way and turn clockwise to secure it in place. Then remove and look at the end.
The plastic end makes it difficult to read the dip stick. It helps a bit to rough the plastic up with some sandpaper so the difference between the shiny oil and dull plastic will be more obvious.
