As I understand it there are many different GM programs. The dealer brought out a stack of papers to find how this particular GM auth worked. There are apparently many different programs and they change (i.e., one program that a friend of mine could have signed me up for expired 11/1 -- so thanks once again Atul!). I don't know exactly how this one works, but apparently it is a couple percent of your best dealer or some variety of this.
My theory was that it never hurts to negotiate your best deal and then pull out the ace (GM auth). Even if this GM office was X dollars from invoice and all incentives, I would know which got me the better deal: the GM auth or the negotiation. In may case I think it was both.
May Mike Lynch could explain more.
