First: 2001 vs 2002 - go for the 2002. Many, many improvements made in m/y 2002. I have owned both an '01 aero wagon and an '03 aero wagon. Both manual. The '03 is definately a better car than the '01. This decision is more important than the tranny decision.
Second: There was a major upgrade to the auto trans in '02 - it was 4 speed '01 and earlier, 5 speed '02 and later. So, if you get a 2001, stay with the manual trans. The manual gearbox is basically the same box you currently drive. The aero clutch is outstanding. If you go w/ 2002 take your preference.
My suggestion on the tranny choice is to choose based upon where you will be driving: If there will be a lot of city driving, stop and go, then I'd go with the auto ('02 or later). If you do more country or highway driving, I prefer the manual.
