No Crank/Starter Saga Update

Follow-up to my 00 Aero no-crank and eventual starter death...I had it towed to a good indie. Starter wouldn't run in the car or on the bench, it was d-e-d dead...however...
I get it back and the d*mned thing no-cranks me 6 miles down the road. I gave it back, and he couldn't replicate it all day long, and neither could I, the rest of the day, until tonight, it no-cranked me again. However, I opened and closed the hood (10 secs in total), went back, it cranked fine.
Seems to crank better, too. Dunno if the starter spec changed or if that's a sign the old one was on its way out.
The chances of having two things in the start chain go wonky are astronomical to say the least...figuring the odds, I bought a megamillions ticket, if I win I can put the $90 million towards the cost of the starter ;)
So, something else is loose, too, possibly the neutral safety switch failing in some new and unheard of way, or a wire somewhere. I may also just replace the $9 starter relay for good measure. I've had enough VWs to know that Bosch relays don't last forever.
