Belt failure @ 55K km = major damage & $$$

This is getting ridiculous. I've only owned this car for 1 year (and only 14,000 kms) and this is the third major problem (DI failure in January & new turbo in July). (BTW, it's a 2000 Wagon LPT)
Anyway, it happened on Friday. Mechanic says that the serpentine belt or maybe the idler pulleys failed, causing the belt to melt, leading to a water pump failure, then leading to a major coolant leak.
All I noticed while driving was a whistling sound (like a pan-flute) that varied in pitch with throttle. 10 minutes later, I lost power steering and the temp gauge shot up. I popped the hood to find coolant all over the engine and battery.
Now the worst part...my warranty expired in August. The whole repair is going to cost me $1500 Canadian!!
But wait! I have an extended warranty that covers me until 80,000 and 2007!! So I call "Drive Assured" to see how much will be covered. Get this: they only cover the initial failure, but they don't cover wear and tear items such as belts. So I'm covered for ONE idler pulley only and $75 for the tow (total re-imbursement of a whopping $126)!! I'm left on the hook for the repair of the water pump, coolant leak & flush, the other idler pulley, and a new belt.
The service manager says that this is typical of these third party extended warranties - he says he'd only buy the manufacturer's warranty programs.
Any suggestions / comments? Does the mechanics assessment of what happened make sense? Could it have been the water pump that failed first, then causing all of the other problems? Is there any way to fight the extended warranty to get more covered? Or should GM do any thing for me?
Any help would be much appreciated!!
Ed
