Well...my 03 Aero is at the dealer right now getting it's engine torn down. Service manager finally got to the bottom of things and said "let's fix the car already." They themselves couldn't understand why this went longer than 3k miles of tests.

Seems as though the culprit to the whole problem was the PCV modification done at my 10k service in Denver before I left for CT. Caused too much pressure in the crankcase and blew out the rings. I explained that to Saab USA that's what I believe the main problem was and the answer was always "that had nothing to do with it, don't believe everything you read online." Funny thing is...I never mentioned anything about the internet, just that I thought it was more than a coincidence.

I along with one other person who happens to be in the same area, are supposedly the only ones experiencing such high oil consumption in the USA (so I was told). Service manager showed me a part from the other guy's car, was a valve...so it looked like underneath the 1/8" of caked on carbon crust. I believe his car was a linear though, and he said that he would be far from surprised if mine was worse. I guess their #1 priority is replacing rings with some updated manufactured type, then looking at bearings, pistons, valves...etc. from there.

There was a LOT of miscommunication going on with this whole case...a lot of 'he said she said' between the dealer, Saab USA, and myself. Saab USA was the one that called for these 'oil consumption tests', while they blamed the dealer for taking so long to get the car fixed. Doesn't make any sense since the dealer was just doing what was instructed by Saab USA every 1000 miles. Saab USA also told me that the service manager and the factory service rep (who btw just got involved last week with this) had the final say on a lemon law case with this since I'm still within the timeframe. Service rep said there's no way he could be part of that decision since he works for the dealer, not the corporation and doesn't know how anyone could say that's his decision...he's just there to make sure the car is fixed correctly, but he would without a doubt recommend either a buy back or switch out to a new 9-5...but that's all he could do, either way the car had to be fixed to either CPO and sell there, or give back to me...so at least I'm happy now that I don't have to drive around with a case of oil in the trunk and remind myself to put in 2-3 quarts every 1000-1200 miles.

Now of course when the Saab legal dept. called me last week, they were so nice, understanding, sympathetic, appologetic and said "let's get this fixed and then we will have more information about buying back your car or putting you into a new one...we want to make things right for our customers and that they're 100% satisfied." I called them after the dealer took my car and explained that they are now doing the repair, and that I appreciate them getting to it before Christmas as I have a lot of traveling to do. I also asked for more info as far as buy back or switching out to a new one. I wasn't surprised at the answer of "well your car is being fixed so that's all we can do for you...have a nice day." Even after my warranty list was pulled (which is almost 3 pages at this point), legal said "well good thing it's still under warranty." (with a little giggle). That just made me realize that Saab is now a GM company for sure. When I had my 1979 900 and my 1989 9000, customer service was top notch. Even the service managers would come out and roll up their sleeves, flip their tie over the shoulder, and help figure out the problem before even taking it in for a diagnostic charge. Even had one point me to an indy because a certain repair wasn't worth paying the dealer for...very cool stuff if you ask me, honest as can be.

I was just hoping that there would be some sort of insurance with this repair. Basically, if at post-warranty, my engine dies because items were worn down from these last 10 months, would they cover repairs out of good will. I somehow doubt it at this point. Was even hoping that they would split the cost of an extended warranty or something to just bring my confidence level up...that would be great. I guess I shouldn't 'expect' anything extra, they are fixing it under warranty and that's their obligation at this point. I just thought that there would be some more customer satisfaction at this point.

Either way, I'm just glad to finally be getting my car repaired and back so I can enjoy driving it again. I haven't really been able to since this started. I hadn't realized how much compression was lost, how bad my gas milage was, how bad the car was running (which ironically died on the way to the dealer, but started 20 minutes later, just wouldn't turn over). I guess everything was just slowly getting worse because rings were wearing faster, so I never felt any drastic change in performance.

I do have to say, that even though this whole experience was frustrating and unpleasant to say the least, the service manager at the dealer has been by far the best person I've dealt with. He never gave me a runaround, kept me updated, went up to bat with Saab USA for me, and has been very cool about this whole process. He's inviting me to go look at the work they're doing, showing me what exactally went wrong internally, and is putting aside all of the old parts for me to inspect.

Hopefully all goes well and my car will run forever w/o another oil disaster...I really miss enjoying the car...I love to drive it, but I hate it for what's happened...but I'm hoping eventually this will all be behind me, and never have a major problem like this again.

One time a dealer told me "once all the bugs are ironed out, everything will be fine. Although, it looks like you have an infestation going on with your's, so it's just going to take a bit more work."

I guess sh*t just happens :)
