1999 9-5's were the only year an SE came as a 2.3lpt four or a 3.0 V6. There's no particular designation of the engine as an SE. '99 SE's came with fours and sixes, 2000 and 2001 SE's were all V6's.

I can't imagine someone going to the time and expense of removing a six and replacing it with a four, so likely the check engine light, or CEL, is on for one of the normal reasons and you probably need to take it to a dealer.

The most common cause of a CEL is a loose gas cap and the only situation where a non-mechanic can do anything. Re-tighten the gas cap and wait a day or two and see if the CEL doesn't reset itself and go back off. Even if it's not a gas cap the CEL coming on my have been caused by some other transitional fault that may correct itself after a few days.

In any event, as long as the car runs normally, a CEL can wait for your convienence as fas as a dealer visit is concerned. You'll never hurt anything by continuing to drive with a CEL on.
