My 9-5 is still on its original front shocks. The rears were replaced at about 55,000 miles as I pull a 2,000lb travel trailer and the shocks needed to be crisper when doing that. I put Bilstein HDs on the rear. The fronts seem to be doing just fine. Wear can be detected by doing the bounce test on each corner of the car. Saab shocks will leak when going bad so you can look for traces of fluid on the shock body or dripping from there.
