but no exhaust system will last forever.

I installed the Saab/Remus system on my 2000 lpt in October of 2003. At that point my car was approaching 4 years of my ownership and had accumulated approximately 100,000 miles. The rear muffler had two or three deep corrosion areas on the bottom side, and I suspect that at least one of them was allowing exhaust gasses to leak out. I replaced the entire system (from catalytic converter back) because I expected the center pipe and front muffler to be bad also.

As I said earlier the cost of the Remus system (eBay purchase from Mainline Saab) was only $7 more than a Saab replacement rear muffler from site sponsors. Since that time sponsors have dropped their price on mufflers and aftermarket brands are being sold too. (I guess that is the penalty I've paid a couple of times by owning a relatively early 9-5 and putting a lot of miles on it fast - not much choice for wearout items.)

I had to cut the old system up into short lengths to transport it to my local recycling center. Much to my surprise the center pipe was still in very good condition! Clearly the current low cost muffler replacement method would be to use an aftermarket rear muffler and retain the original center pipe and front muffler.

I very much enjoy my Saab/Remus exhaust. I had my car into the Dealership recently to inspect wheel bearings for source of road noise. They roadtested my car twice, and each time they started my car the deep rumbling sound of the exhaust note caused every head to turn in the service waiting area!
