Automatic reset Posted by Ari [Email] (#2847) [Profile/Gallery] (more from Ari) on Tue, 7 Dec 2004 10:42:33 In Reply to: Re: 'some' protection, Garrett, Tue, 7 Dec 2004 08:06:46 Members do not see ads below this line. - Help Keep This Site Online - Signup |
The overload protection is a positive temperature coefficient resistor - basically, when the motor pulls a lot of current, the resistor heats up, and it's resistance increases - this cuts back on the current and protects the motor from burning up. There is no reset button. Once the resistor cools back down, it should work fine.
I'm not sure of the 9-5 design, but in older designs, the components were awash in grease inside the motor. And the resistor was an actual resistive element clamped between two metal springs. I suspect that some current arcing at the springs burned some grease, and this added resistance to the system. I'm hoping the newer design got around this.
Give the motor a while (15 minutes at least) to cool down. Make sure that the wiper can move (you can't move it by hand, but at least it pulls away from the headlight lens).
