A couple weeks back I asked the board for economical solutions in getting an additional key for my recently purchased 01 9-5 SE. Here's how it worked out:
I purchased a used key on ebay for $30 including shipping.
Had my local Saab dealer order me a new key w/o the microchip. Cost: $36.
Once the new key arrived I took my ebay purchased key into the Saab dealer. They removed the microchip/FOB from the ebay key put it into the new Saab cut key and programmed it to my car. Cost $47.50.
Total cost: 30+36+47.5 = $113.50.
Brand new key from the same dealer would have cost $225.
Side story: I successfully contacted the previous owner of my car to ask if he happened to have the other key. He told me he turned in 3 keys to the dealer when he turned in the car to his Saab dealer at the end of his lease. The car was then sold via auction to a used car lot. The used car lot sold the car to me. Somewhere in this transition 2 of the 3 keys disappeared. The question I'll never know the answer to: who's the key thief? Someone at the Saab dealer? Someone at the auction house or the used car lot? Like I said, I'll never know and at this point not sure I care, but it's interesting how you've got all those valuable used fob keys on ebay for sale. Where are all those keys coming from? Wrecked cars? Doubt it.
