While Iagree with you that this forum tends to be a focal point for people to report just the bad news, and also agree that other cars have components within their engine bays that could possible fail and stop you cold, I am not aware of another car that, like the Saab, packages all of the critical ignition components on top of the engine , where the heat is concentrated, and would have this same failure mode. If I am wrong,I will stand corrected. Also regarding the V-6, problem with your theory is just that, it is a theory. If one DI fails, you are not just limping home with a rough running engine. You are drowning your catalytic converter in unburnt gasses and ruining it, probably within a few seconds of the initial failure. I don't know how bad a repair that is, but suspect it is a lot of Kroners or whatever they drink over there in Sweden.I have had two DI failures, but always while attempting to start the engine, so have not had the anxiety of some people who got caught in traffic, but can understand their frustration with this.
