I see carrying a spare DI as a guarantee that the DI in the engine will never fail. I've only had one Saab DI failure, and that was a very slow, benign failure, that allowed me plenty of time to secure a new one.
I see picking up a spare DI as a convienence so that I don't need to go out and buy one on short notice. I've got enough (red) DI-equipped cars right now that having one spare isn't a bad idea.
Of course, there are literally hundreds of things on a car that can fail and leave it dead. Unless we're going for a nice jaunt into the deep Amazon (the river basin, not the Internet retailer), most of us don't carry spare fuel pumps, ECUs, ignition switches, alternators, injectors......
Face it - most of us aren't happy until we're not happy - we need something to fixate on, so that we don't think about the many things that can cause our cars to stop. So the DI is the winner.
