The 'W' button allows automatic transmissions to start out in 3rd gear. It will automatically shift into higher gears as required, but will never go into gears 1 or 2. It is safe to leave it on all the time. Starting out in 3rd gear tends to cause less wheel spin due to the lower torque applied to the wheels given the same engine rpms. Its also easier on the traction control system which initially reduces throttle before applying brakes. The down side is a slow start in any pavement condition, which can cause a panic if you're pulling out into traffic, you really have to stomp on the gas more. Some find its easier to just use a light foot when starting out in the snow.
