The first being that all four tires should be the exact same, regarless of car or drive line type( FWD,AWD etc.) Second, while an all season tire might get you through a very minor snow event,a full setof snows on any car,Saab or otherwise, makes all the difference in the world in traction when turning and stopping, which are the times you really need it in the winter.
After a number of years of ignoring tire rotation I have again become a believer,at least on my 9-5. Apparently the rears have a tendency to wear unevenly due to a slight hopping tendency since the weight on them is a lot lower than on the front, and I tended to ignore it since I would just put the fronts on the other end after my winter /summer changeover, and repeat that in the fall with the snows. I ended up putting about 15 K miles on a set per use, and have found that rear wear has been the problem, not front as one might expect. Now I just have them rotated at each 5000 mile oil change.
Also, the 16 inch wheels are more likely to hold up in pothole infested areas than the 17 inchers.
