For several weeks, my 2001 saab 9-5 w/ 75,000 miles has had an intermittent starting problem. Most times, the vehicle starts perfectly. At other times however, when turning the ignition key, only the dash lights etc come on...w/ no cranking of the engine. Usually after a few tries of key turning, the starter engages and the engine starts perfectly. So far, I needed a tow to my mechanic once because it still wouldn't start after 30 minutes of trying. When it arrived at my mechanic, it started right up. The only sound occurring when it doesn't start is a slight electrical hum. There is no clicking noise as in a bad starter motor but I'm told a bad starter motor can have another problem which doesn't make the clicking sound. I've noticed that the only times it doesn't start right away is after I've driven the car for over 10-15 minutes I'll then turn the engine off and then try to re-start it right away or after just a few minutes...it may then fail. But it seems that after I've let things set for awhile and cool down, perhaps for over 15 minutes or so, it starts right up or only after one or two turns of the key. I've not had the problem first start in the morning.
My mechanic tells me that there could be many causes and doesn't want to just go ahead and replace the starter motor or relay switch or whatever, because each one is expensive and involved and unless it fails during his test he cannot honestly diagnose the problem. I had even left him my car for a week but it did not fail enough for him to diagnose.
Does anyone have any other suggestions as to how to test for the specific problem? Is there anything else to look for? In this particular model/year may there be a common defective part that is probably worth replacing anyway?
I would really appreciate any help and insight.
