Could be the DI cassette as others suggest. You did not post your miles, but a 1999 must have lots of those.
You can get a new one for $300 at http://www.eeuroparts.com, free ship, no tax to most destinations. Much more expensive at dealer. Cost at dealer will also include labor and diagnostics. In Denver, some dealer is charging $700 or more for a DI cassette + labor etc. You can install in a few minutes with #30 torx driver from the trunk. If you can borrow a red or black DI you can get your vehicle home. That will also confirm that the DI is the problem, but note CPS notes below. You can upgrade shipping with eeuroparts as well.
If vehicle starts after getting a cold engine, that is a classic sign of a failing crankshaft position sensor. Then will not start again when engine is hot.
