XM Skyfi2 Cassette Adapter Acting Up in 2001 9-5

I have a 2001 9-5 and, like so many people, I got an XM Skyfi2 for Xmas. Love the XM service and fairly pleased with the install (for a newbie's first attempt). I was using the cassette adapter without problem until yesterday, when the cassette player started to "skip" ahead and try to flip to side B every 30 to 60 seconds, causing my XM to kick in and out. I flipped over to the FM modulator and it was fine until I started to pick up a real station on that frequency and had to change frequencies.
I understand the trade offs... the FM modulator give a cleaner look by not having the cassette adapter wire to deal with, but provides a lesser quality sound. The cassette adapter provides better quality audio, but you have to deal with the wire.
So, my questions are: Does anyone know what was going on with my cassette deck when the adapter kept trying to skip and flip sides? What are people's preferences between the FM modulator and the cassette adapter, and why?
Thanks for the feedback!
