Just went through key trouble with my 01 wagon. Same key as yours, no banana.
*I didn't get a "key battery low" SID message but remote didn't work, nor could I start car.
* Swapped the battery in the key, didn't fix problem.
* dealer reprogrammed key and then it worked (no charge on warranty)
* the car will NOT start with a dead key battery or misprogrammed key. The SID will say "key not accepted" (I tried my dead key after opening the car with the other).
* it's TOUGH to get the back off. You need a tiny screwdriver and a small one. Push in the hole in the side, prying upwards at the same time like you were trying to push the back off. At the same time insert the other screwdriver in the gap you've hopefully created and pry up. The manual shows a good picture of what to do but they make it sound too easy.
If you need batteries, I have lots for the cost of mail plus a couple bucks.
