Loud pop/click/snap sound when opening/closing door?

Over the past few weeks, a very loud click/pop sound has developed from my driver's side door hinge whenever opening or closing the door. The loud click/pop happens each time the door is pushed in or out one "stop" (you know, the 3 predetermined degrees of opening).
At first I thought maybe it just needed some greasing up. But upon closer examination, it appears that the part which guides these "stops" has a loose nut and bolt connecting it to the frame of the car. Is this a frequent problem with the 9-5, and it is an easy fix? It looks like all I have to do is tighten up that loose bolt, but I don't want to accidentally make things worse.
Thanks in advance for any advice.
Cheers
