Dissappearing Coolant

Recently, the FILL COOLANT warning message came up on the SID. There is still some coolant in the expansion tank, such that once the engine is warmed up and the coolant has expanded, the FILL COOLANT warning doesn't reappear upon subsequent restarts. So I'm not extremely worried about the level, but it is something I need to take care of soon.
I'm inclined to simply go to the local autoparts store pick up some coolant and top it off, but I'm wondering if I should have the dealer do this very simple task if only to get this issue 'on the books' This '00 Aero (w/ CPO warranty) is up to 72K miles, so I still have 29K miles of warranty left. I'm thinking that if something is seriuosly wrong, I should start officially documenting the dissappearing coolant. Any thoughts on this?
Also, after browsing some old posts, I figured out the coolant for my vehicle ('00 Aero) was originally Xerex G-48 formula, but it is most likely now Xerex G-5. The coolant inside the expansion tank is green/blue in color. If I top up myself, I'll probably go with Valvoline Xerex G-5. Comments on that choice are welcome as well.
Thanks,
KevinH
