Need more info for an answer.... Posted by MI-Roger [Email] (#882) [Profile/Gallery] (more from MI-Roger) on Tue, 11 Jan 2005 09:05:09 In Reply to: Was this engine tuned?, Pit, Tue, 11 Jan 2005 06:08:19 Members do not see ads below this line. - Help Keep This Site Online - Signup |
What year is the engine? Owners could/still can purchase a factory tuning kit for the 2000 model year only. Kit includes a re-programmed ECU, different spark plugs, and a different badge for the engine cover. Of these items, only the different badge can be identified by simply looking at the engine.
Most engine tuning for the 2.3l engine involves revised ECU programs. These can't be seen by a visual examination, and (to the chagrin of some owners who have posted here), the programs can be wiped out (returned to factory stock) if the Dealer flashes the ECU during any service call. A well intentioned Tech may do this as a favor to you, thinking he is giving you the "latest and greatest" engine program at no cost, when he actually is eliminating your $1,000 tuning upgrade!
Is the turbo inlet pipe an aluminum casting (factory stock) or a polished/painted steel weldment (upgrade)? Does the turbo exhaust pipe have two bumps containing catalytic converters (factory stock) or a single (or none) bump for a conveter (upgrade)?
These are all visual clues whether the engine has been tuned, but not definitive answers.
