car will not start

stats: 2002 Saab 9-5 ARC V6 3.0t
milage is aprox 45,600 miles
Type of gas used: 93 octane
I was driving home this evening on the interstate when my car felt like it was in limp mode. My gas level was between 1/4 and 1/8 tank. I looked at the instrument panel and the SID and saw nothing. Suddenly the CEL started blinking stopped blinking after about 3 sec. I drove for another couple of minutes to the next exit, got off and stopped the car. I waited a minute and then started the car again. A couple of blocks later, it went into limp mode again and CEL blinking. I pulled over to the side of the road. Car would not start again but did turn over normally. The temperature gauge did not race high either.
In the past, I have noticed that the car sometimes would not start on first try. On second try, engine would start but battery light and caution light remained on. The lights went off after I pressed on the accelerator lightly. In the past week or two, this situation has been occuring a little more frequently.
Does anybody have any idea what is wrong? Is the belt not catching the altenator pulley wheel properly on startup?
I regularly drive without the radio on to try and hear any squeeking indicating a bad belt and heard none.
thanks,
Mike
