why not check sludge during head retorque?

you should plan to do a head retorque anyway, so why not combine the two and inspect for sludge while the vc's off?
If it's clean up there, good chance it's clean down below. If it's not, then you may have enough reason to pull the pan for inspection.
Luckily, my fleetcar engine was pretty clean when bought at 50k (although engine was replaced with a 20k'er), but if it hadn't been, I might've been inclined to run something like Amsoil flush then pull the pan to inspect the oil pickup screen for clogging, although really not sure what the best angle of attack might be at that juncture.
This stuff's nothing to joke about. My fleetcar engine was toast at 50k, prob. from sludge, and replaced before I bought it.
I'd like to scream over the stupidity of it all, given that 200k engines were what Saab was famous for on earlier models, but why bother?
