There's a fascinating real-world study of synthetic oil change intervals on the web -just Google it and it'll pop up- that has also convinced me that extended change intervals are justified, even to conservative folks like me. At present I change at 5K, but think, based on what I've read, that I'll up it to 7500. Tests of Mobil 1 and Amsoil indicate that just about anyone's safe up to 10K....but I'll hedge my bets a while longer.
If you're worried about the cost of synthetic, do the change yourself! Changing oil on a 9-5 isn't rocket science. I get Mobil 1 0W-30 for around $4.20 a quart, so call it $18 for oil by the time I pay sales tax. The dealer charges me $6.50 for a filter and the copper washer, so, $7 including tax. That's $25. If you go 6K between changes (which I think is reasonable, although I don't go quite that far), that's two of the old 3K O&F changes, which used to run me around $15 a pop for the same materials. So it's certainly no more than a wash, and maybe a bit cheaper to use synthetic rather than the dino oil. Buy a jack, a drain pan, a 1/2 inch socket, and an oil filter wrench as one-time investments which will quickly pay for themselves. Many auto parts stores, such as Auto Zone, will take your used oil. (Tip: if you take your used oil there, buy the new oil there! DON'T try to save a few cents on the oil by shopping at Wal-Mart, which will NOT take your used oil!)
