Immediately above the crackshaft on the 2.3l engine is an idler pulley, called the center idler pulley. This pulley is unusually difficult to change (almost to the point of pulling the engine). The OEM belt routing wraps under this pulley and the OEM length belt is called the "Long Belt". until recently this was the only factory approved belt routing for these engines.
Saab recently released an approved "Short Belt" option in the service information which by-passes this pulley altogether. The serpentine belt is slightly shorter and there is no need to replace this very difficult to access pulley. You can either leave this pulley on the engine or remove it. Getting it off isn't too bad, getting a new center idler pulley on is almost impossible.
