They're putting a "remanufactured" engine in the car. Per the service rep, it's a used block that's been machined, then rebuilt using new parts. Not the ideal situation, but better than the alternative which was a teardown/rebuild of the current engine. The reasoning for new vs. reman was that they don't make the 175hp version any longer (they could have put the aero engine in--i wouldn't have minded).

Apparently they were getting extremely low pressure readings from the bottom and the top. Since they're not breaking the old engine down (at least not until they get it to their research facility, i assume), they don't know the exact cause, but alluded to perhaps a blocked oil intake or bad crank bearing. I'm guessing i'll never know what the problem was.

I must say that, other than a less than ideal situation with roadside assistance, the whole experience has been completely hassle free. Essentially, "keep the brand new 9-3 loaner until I call you in a couple of weeks when your car is ready." I commend Saab for standing behind their product 100% and abiding by the terms of the CPO agreement with no questions asked. According to the service manager, this is retail an $8-9k job, and all i'm asked to do is change the oil on a regular basis . . .

Anyhow, I think this speaks volumes for Saab's CPO program and their commitment to customer satisfaction. Let this be a lesson for those who buy used, but want to save a few bucks by not going the CPO route.

I'll keep you updated. (and, i'll make sure they torque the head bolts properly)
Regards,
--scott
