Techron? Trust me, I'm not sure either...but you have to cover the basics. Techron solved that problem on my LPT, in that exact year/model, on an almost identical usage pattern (6 mile commute).
But I also agree with you, self-diagnosis an easy trap to fall into, doubly so when the car is so oriented towards the electrical. It's really easy to look for the next electric component.
But dealers and indies can chase their tails as well as us DIYers, so, you sorta have to get corrected for basic tune, or you can miss something tiny and cheap. He's about $25 (+ labor) away from that point, so it couldn't hurt, and the next step is the indie/dealer.
Quick experience...my NG900 was stuttering and cutting back under high boost...I could have gone through the DI, MAP sensor, fuel pressure regulator, pump...and a dozen other > $200 parts. Indie wanted to look at turbo. Dealer wanted to sell me a DI. But I quite accidentially noticed it was a 75 cent chunk of split vac hose causing it.
