A fun story...and some
questions at the end...

I feel *really* lucky.
Last week, I bought a 900S for $1.
Really.

I was having lunch with a friend
who owned a 1986 900S. Actually,
I had thought he sold it years ago,
but during lunch, it came out that he
still owned it, but it had been sitting
in a parking lot for about a year.

Its last service (ouch) was in August
of 1996. Fortunately, it had only been
driven 6,000 miles since then (it has
92,000 miles now). He bought a new car
in late 1997, and the 900S was sadly orphaned
to being his cargo carrying car once every
few months.

Anyway, about two years ago, it would no longer
start unless he jump started it. This reduced his
driving to about once every 5 or 6 months! Then, last
time he tried to start it (*last* Xmas) it wouldn't start.
So he left it parked for one year! Some people don't
care much about cars, eh?

So, at lunch, when I heard about it, I said "let me
help you get it running". And he said, "no, it is
too much trouble." Then the $1 deal...he asks me,
"do you want to buy it?". I said, "No thanks, I already
own a car". So he said, "I'll sell it to you for $1".
I replied, "OK", thinking, worst case, I can sell it for parts...

Anyway, after I got the key, I checked out the car.
Sure enough, it wouldn't start, not even with a jump.
So I went to PEP Boys Auto Parts, bought a battery,
put it in...and (drum roll)...it started right up!

I took it to a local (Saab only) mechanic, who got
it into tune, and assures me that it is just fine.
Only thing it now needs is a new muffler and tires!!!

So...that is the fantastic story... I just bought
a very nice 900S with 92,000 miles on it for $1!
And, because I live in California, the car has no
rust and the paint is pretty decent.

I am thinking of using this car to go up to ski country
(either that, or I will sell it in the classifieds here!).
So -- my questions are:
-- What all around tires (not snow tires, but good on snow
given I live in California)do people recommend?
-- Any particular muffler recommendations/issues to know about?
-- What issues should I watch out for on this car that has been
sitting for so long without running?
--
The only cosmetic problems the car has are:
-- dashboard cracking
What do people think of those dashboard overlays?
-- the usual headliner problem
-- the faux leather on the front of the glove box is peeling off
(it actually curls -- anybody been able to flatten/fix this
with an iron or other method?)

thanks,

Eric
