Lower Control Arm broken. need help.

HI,
Tonight, my driver side lower control arm on my '89 900 standard broke while backing out of driveway. A friend's did the same thing before few months back. I think he paid $600 to get it fixed at a local shop here in Portland, OR. Is this standard pricing?
Was wondering, if I get one from a junk yard if all years would be compatible with mine. Also, anything special to look out for?
I don't have mechanical experience other than changing oil etc... how hard would it be to change it myself and what tools is required?
If I got the part from junk yard, how much should I expect to pay from a reputable Saab indie mechanic? Thanks for your help. -Steve
