ignition timing. Throw a timing light on the beast and see if #1 is firing at the prescribed 14/16 degrees BTDC.
I have seen similar 4 strokes die similar deaths, and all my cases turned out to be toasted timing belts/chain sprockets/tensioners.
Again, I am not a SAAB veteran, but have seen VW's, Buicks, and other 4 strokers have a camshaft timing system malfunction, and inspite of good fuel and blazing spark, just crank till the starter melts down because the valves are totally out of synch with the respective pistons and you have a one time pop, then dead engine.
Check the timing on #1 cylinder, access window on clutch cover, top center, and see if she is sparking when she should be.
