Actually, my experience is that the '88+ brakes are in fact better. Aside from the obvious difference that the later ones are slightly larger, the improved caliper design offers improved brake feel and substantially less sponginess in the pedal. If you've got the non-vented rotors (which is everything but '86 SPGs and '87 Ts) up front, the later brakes give you less fade, which is especially welcome on twisty roads.
I've only done the swap once, but it was a night and day difference on my '87 SPG. I'm planning on doing on my '80 5-door, and may even consider it for my 99! :)
