Hmm... well, that qualifies as interesting. A failed or slipping alternator or belt wouldn't cause this scenario, since even without an alternator the car will continue to run off the battery for at *least* several minutes.

The shift-up light detail is certainly odd, and wouldn't have any bearing on the hall sensor. Does the "gradual loss of power" mean the car is still running, just not well, or does it mean that it dies instantly? If the car is still running, Jim has the right idea - check the air mass meter. If it flat-out dies, then it's more likely the hall sensor. Since yours is an '89, you can have the dealer pull the codes from the ECU - actually, I think instructions on how to do that at home are in the FAQ section of TSN. I'd start there - it'll give you a good clue as to what's going on.
