The vacuum line may connect to the vacuum reservoir for the heater controls(I can' be sure because I'm inside and my car is covered with snow ... not the thing we usually experience here in Atlanta - but it makes me feel right at home :-). Check the picture to see whether the hose you're thinking of is the one that is headed straight back.
The connector on your distributor is the Hall Effect Sensor connector. It takes the pulses from the distributor and sends them to the Ignition Control Unit to give you spark, etc. Especially in turbos, the plastic for the connectors deteriorates and causes ignition dropouts when the sires move (like when you accelerate hard.)
