For shame, Roger! (just kidding!)
I once carried an entire queensized bedroom set, including two dressers, a bedframe with nightstands, and a mirror, in the back of my Saab, with the hatch closed. It was disassembled, of course, the build-it-yourself Scandinavian stuff, and the mattresses weren't included. My wife and I managed to fit all the boxes into the back like we were playing Tetris, interleaving the boxes tightly from floor to ceiling, with the long parts going between the front seats and under the rear view mirror! But the hatch closed. Had to rely on side mirrors to see to the rear. Car rode pretty low, too! :> But I think I got more than a pickup truckload in there when I was done.
Don't feel too guilty, though. It's easier to fit a lot of smaller parcels in there than one giant box that just =slightly= too big. And driving with the hatch open or held down with a bungee cord is no fun... the exhaust comes in and chokes you. Especially in the wintertime, it's better to play it safe and take the company truck!
