Never run snows on front only!!!- Posted by IrieTom [Email] ![]() ![]() ![]() In Reply to: What I didn't get from the Snow Tire FAQ ..., jwr, Fri, 22 Dec 2000 18:35:28 Members do not see ads below this line. - Help Keep This Site Online - Signup |
When I was 17, I spun my dad's '83 900 during a freezing rain storm on US7 just outside of Manchester, VT. We later figured out that this happened because there were snow tires on the front, but summer(all-season) tires on the back.
I noticed that the rain had turned into freezing rain, and let off the gas to slow down. Unfortunately, the front tires were much better than the rear tires at slowing down, and the rear end of the car kept moving faster than the front end of the car, giving it the stability of a tilt-a-whirl.
I was lucky that there was no opposing traffic when the car spun, because there could have easily been a fatal crash. I was especially lucky that I didn't even hit anything, and was able to continue at a VERY slow pace- with the car trying to spin every time I slowed down.
2 more snow tires are far cheaper than fixing whatever/whoever got broken in a crash.
You are correct in saying that a change in attitude can help you survive a snowy drive. The reduced traction means that you won't be able to turn or slow down as well. Snow tires will give you more control than all-seasons, but can't alter the laws of physics. They will make a safe driver safer, but a lead-footed driver will lose control of the car at a higher speed.
By the way, just thinking about the Appalachian Gap makes me grin from ear to ear, because clearing that pass means that a nice single-chair ride to Paradise is just minutes away down at the base of Mad River Glen.
Happy trails!
