Those little plastic elbows in the washer fluid lines which are directly underneath the nozzles on the hood actually serve a purpose on the headlight washer assembly.
While researching the necessity of replacing the ones which had gunked up and clogged on both my father's car and mine, I learned that they cost $12 each at the dealer, and the only purpose they served was to keep fluid in the hose so that the fluid squirted instantly instead of hesitating for a fraction of a second. The only possible drawback to eliminating them was determined to be "premature wiper wear" from that first wipe over dry glass. Both cars have survived more than a year without them, without any noticeably bad side effects.
However, it was pointed out to me that a car with headlight wipers would need these check-valves to keep the fluid from siphoning out of the reservoir all by itself.
