My 86 900s lost its automatic tranny last week. Local saab mechanics tell me that the torque converter/hydraulic pump failed when the the splines on the shaft sheared off. (This is apparently a very common failure point.) Assuming this is the failure, my mechanic and I are pondering why we can't remove the engine/transmission mounting bolts while the both are in the car. This would allow us to remove the engine, replace the converter and pump with out removing the transmission. Are we out of our minds? The rest of the transmission appears to be fine. Has any one ever done this, is it possible, or are we just mad? Thanx
