Yes the AAM is the major input sensor.
Even US spec 16 Valves run well with the O2 sensor disconnected. The sensor is needed for cars with a catalytic converter to keep the A/F ratio in the range where the cat is effective.
If the signal from the O2 sensor becomes degraded or the signal is incorrect the engine will not run properly at idle and other than WOT conditions. At WOT you are running open loop and the car may run normally. If this condition is experienced and if the car runs normally with the O2 sensor disconnected, then the sensor or it's connections to the ECU are the culprit. Running a cat equiped car with the O2 sensor disconnected or with a bad sensor for a long period of time may damage the cat.
Generally speaking, running with an O2 sensor will give you better fuel milege and running with it disconnected, the engine will seem to run better because the set fuel map in the ECU is a little richer without the O2 sensor input to correct the mixture to stoic.
